Maria gazed up at the Whomping Willow, eyes sharp and wondering. What would happen if she just killed herself and got it over with? He couldn't use her family as a threat if she weren't there to miss them when they died. But I don't want the rest of my family to die. I'm the only one that can protect them. She thought with a sigh.
She fell to the ground with a loud thud and lay there, looking up at the clouds and the sky. "And now I have to recruit." She said softly, frowning. "I have to find everyone that I can to join the stupid organization." That wouldn't do. What if he asked her sisters to join?
"That man must be able to read minds." She said, and realized that she was talking in Parseltongue. A snake had slithered nearby, glanced at her momentarily, and gone away. But, at least only the snakes heard. That was how the "Dark Lord" wanted it. And who would believe it anyway? If she told anyone other than those she was recruiting, he would either punish her or her family, whether they took her seriously or not.
"I'm stuck, I guess." Maria said in Parseltongue, and picked herself up. One thing she wouldn't do, however, was let him make the rules. She'd fight it. Member of the Slayers or not, she'd fight him. Picking up her wand, she looked at the tree. "Wingardium Leviosa." She said, and a small walnut lifted itself in the trees way. An enormous branch swung at it like a baseball bat and it rocketed towards the castle.

Gyan walked down to the Whomping Willow with his wand out. It was a usual practice of his to try out hexes, curses, and jinx's on the trees branches while in swinging range. It was good magical and physical exercise. He popped his wrists, neck, sholders, fingers, and everything else he could think of while he walked. He was nearly there when he saw a Hufflepuff girl, sitting just outside of the tree's reach.
Gyan was particullary cheerful after Professor Dean had Obliviated him. He wasn't aware of his meeting with the Professor, nor did he remember him trying to recruit him.
"Carefull, I wouldn't get too close to that tree" Gyan warned, giving a small wink. He wasn't quite sure why he was in such a good mood.

Sophia was walking around the grounds when she saw one of the other girls who were in the class room. She ran over to her while thoughts raced in her head. She was crying also. Did the professor as her to join too. When she caught up to her she smiled at her kindly hoping to talk to her about all this.
"Hi. I'm Sophia Romha. Nice to meet you!" She smiled en decided to throw the question into dangerous waters. She took a deep breath and lowed her voice so Gyan couldn't hear. "What did the professor as you? Did he ask you to join as well?" she smiled awkwardly an hesitantly at her. She rested her hand on the girls shoulder. What have I gotten myself into? she stammered in her thoughts.

"Well, Sophia! What's going on? Did I miss the party invitation?" Gyan said cheerfully. Since he could only see her back and was too far away to hear, he couldn't tell that the girl was crying.

Sophia had a few tears in her eyes that escaped as she turned to Gyan he was scared. She smiled hoping he couldn't see her crying. She shook he head and smiled. "Just talking about classes and stuff." She smiled again turning back toward the girl.

His eyes narrowed, and the smile on is face fell. "Now, I don't beleive classes would spark tears." He said, now standing behind the Hufflepuff girl.
He saw a very long branch turn and shoot towards them. Gyan pointed his wand at the knob beneith the tree and bellowed "Stupefy!". A jet of red light blasted out of the tip of his wand at hit the knob. The tree suddenly froze like marble. Not a leaf or branch shook.
{Allright, wait for Maria}

Maria blinked as Sophia spoke softly to her. She remembered the girl of course, and had assumed that she had been asked the same question, but shook her head violently. "Not here." Maria muttered, and turned. The boy that had followed her down there had his wand pointed over her shoulder and she ducked. A stunning spell hit the tree branch that had rocketed towards them.
"Thanks." She said, and looked up. "Oh! You're that boy that Alexis hangs out with! Nice to meet you. I'm Maria."
She looked over her shoulder again. The tree was shivering back to life. "Hey, how did you know that? We haven't been taught to stun yet, and I'm a second year!" Blinking, she glanced over at the boy. "What else do you know?"
She wanted to stop Sophia from crying. If Sophia revealed to anyone about anything, she knew that they would both be in trouble. Heart racing, she knew that if she kept the conversation cheerful it might aide Sophia in being quiet.

Sophia shook her head and whipped her tears away. "Thanks Gyan." She smiled looking at Maria. She looked at the castle then back at Maria. "I have to go but maybe we can meet somewhere so we can talk about things. Ok Maria?" She smiled motioning toward the black lake a litte. She smiled then left.

Gyan watched Sophia leave, and turned back to Maria. "Well, I was raised by my brother. He's an Auror, and he took it upon-" He cur himself short to swing his wand like a sword, shouting "Sectumsempra!" At another branch.
A huge gash appeared on the newcomming branch and it backed off. "Himself to teach me everything he knew. So of course, " He cut off again to stun another branch, "I have all of his strengths and weaknesses." He finished.
"Shall we move a bit out of reach?" Gyan offered.

"An auror, huh?" Maria said thoughtfully. "Um, yeah. Let's move."
Maria scurried up the hill a little and turned around to talk with Gyan again. A thought reached her mind, and it might have been one that would help her situation. "I'm wondering if you know any way to block someone from reading your mind. Is there any way? Or, is reading minds still impossible for witches and wizards?"

{My description of Occlumency and Legilimency comes from Chapter twenty-four of HP:Ootp}
Gyan sat down and turned to Maria. "I've had very similar conversations with your sister Alexis, and the hext time you see her, I'm sure she'll tell you it worked to her benifit."
Gyan took a deep breath before continuing. "Only muggles talk of "mind reading'. The mind is not simply a book to opened and read at will. Thoughts are not etched on the insides of skulls, to be perused by any invader. The mind is a complex, many-layered thing...or at least, most minds are..." He said, thinking of Pepe.
"It s true, that those who have mastered Legilimency are able to delve into the minds if their victims and interperete their findings correctly. For example; A Legilimens, like my brother, always knows when somone is lying to them."
"There is a way to block this though. Someone who is skilled at Occlumency, like myself, is able to block people from entering their minds and keep all thoughts and feelings sealed from detection." Gyan finished.

{Lol. This is perfect. Just the right opportunity.}
Alexis? She thought, and wondered what mind-reading had to do with her sister. Why would Alexis be interested in Legilimency?
"Wow." Maria said in pure awe. "You sound like a textbook. How, um . . . difficult is it to learn Occlumency?"
If Legilimency is sort of like reading minds, then why does Alexis need to know about it? Surely she hasn't found out that the Professor knows it as well!

Gyan looked at her worried expression and decided to ease her mind a bit. "Don't worry about Alexis. With the combined efforts of my brother and I, we, well, gave Alexis her memory back. Let her give you the details"
He remembered her question. "Yes, it's very difficult. You may be able to learn it in mabey a month or two's time, but it took me four years to master it. And everytime I use it, I get a little bit stronger."

Maria was shocked, but squealed with delight. "Finally! My sister's back!" She wanted to hug her sister's friend but decided that would be awkward. "Thank you so much!"
And then her question was answered. It wasn't an answer she wanted to hear. Four years of practice? Ah, but maybe it will be worth it in the end. "Well, maybe I'll try it however long it takes. Thanks for covering that. You see, I think that . . ." She stopped. Maria wanted to warn the boy of the impending doom that the Wizarding World might be head for, but she couldn't. "I think that maybe someone here has been searching my mind. Using Legilimency, I mean. I'm not sure, but I want to learn Occlumency anyway. It might help me in the long run."

Gyans eyes narrowed a bit. "Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about what's going on. Apparently, according to rumor, there's been someone recruiting-" He stopped. His eyes widened. He remembered his meeting with the professor at the hut, he remembered his attempt at recruiting him. The memory charm had worn off.
"Maria, tell me everything you know about Professor Dean."
